ANATOMY OF SUBCLAVIUS MUSCLE

The subclavius muscle is the short muscle of shoulder girdle.

ORIGIN: at the junction of first rib and costal cartilage.

INSERTION: groove of subclavius in the inferior surface of the middle third of the clavicle.

It lies behind the pectoralis major

NERVE SUPPLY: subclavian nerve / the nerve to the subclavius muscle which is the branch of C5 and C6.

FUNCTION: stabilization of the clavicle in the Sternoclavicular joint.

It stabilizes clavicle during movement of the shoulder girdle.

It also depresses the clavicle inferiorly and interiorly.

The muscle is small and hidden.

Usually there is a thought that, the subclavius muscle when it gets into spasm, compresses the brachial plexus between the first rib and the clavicle.
