IMPORTANT ANATOMICAL STRUCTURES AROUND SACROILIAC JOINT
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction is difficult to diagnose and treat.
- Superior cluneal nerves: conditions associated with problems of cluneal nerves can often be confused with pain involving sacroiliac joint.
- Cluneal nerves are located 6 cm from posterior superior iliac spine. Extending the incision beyond 6 cm from PSIS endangers cluneal nerve.
- Superior gluteal neurovascular bundle : close proximity to sacroiliac joint.
- Piriformis muscle: arises from anterior surface of lateral process of sacrum in close proximity to sacroiliac joint.
- L4 and L5 roots run in front of sacroiliac joint and may become injured in problems of sacroiliac joint.
- Harvesting the bone graft may violate sacroiliac joint and can cause pain in sacroiliac joint region.
- Pelvic instability : major displacement and instability occurs in fracture or dislocations involving sacroiliac joint.
- Excessive movement of sacroiliac joint with tearing and stretching of strong ligament creates subtle instability associated with pain leading to sacroiliac joint dysfunction
