ANATOMY OF STERNOCLAVICULAR JOINT
- Composed Of proximal end of clavicle and manubrium sterni
- Clavicle in turn is supported by the costal cartilage of first rib
- Type : Gliding type/ saddle joint/ synovial joint
- Articular surface : proximal end of clavicle + clavicular notch of manubrium sterni
Stability :
A. Sternoclavicular ligaments –
- two Parts – anterior and posterior
- Connect clavicle to manubrium
- Posterior SC ligament is important to anteroposterior stability
B. Costoclavicular ligaments –
- connect Costal cartilage to inferior surface of clavicle
- Important for medial stability
- It is preserved during resection of clavicle
- ( < 15mm resection is allowed at medial end of clavicle)
Movement at SCJ is limited.
