ANATOMY of TALUS
- Talus is one of the seven tarsal bones of the foot.
- It acts as a connecting link between leg and foot.
- Parts of Talus are: head, neck, body, lateral process and medial process.
- HEAD is intra articular and anteriorly it articulates with the navicular bone, inferiorly with sustentaculum tali of calcaneum.
- NECK is non articular. Fracture of talus neck can lead to a vascular necrosis and arthritis of subtalar joint.
- BODY has an inferior and a superior surface.
- Fracture of the lateral process is usually seen in snow boarders hence also called snowboarder’s ankle.
- Sometimes it may be missed out in X-ray and may be confused as ankle sprain.
- Posterior process composed of 2 tubercles medial and lateral, in between these 2 tubercle there is a groove for FHL. Fracture of posterior process can be sometimes occult.
- Talus is supplied by anterior tibial artery, posterior tibial artery and peroneal artery.
