Educational goals and characteristics

  • The fellow will assist and be supervised in primary joint replacement and joint revision surgery including the use of allografts.
  • In addition, the fellow will be part of a surgical team performing limb salvage for musculo-skeletal tumours.
  • This will include reconstructions with custom-made prosthesis and/or segmental bone allografts.
  • The fellow will be involved in all aspects of the activities of the tissue bank (donor review, retrieval, processing and distribution).
  • The fellow will also be required to participate in the retrospective allograft implant audit along with attending board and scientific meetings. The fellow will be involved in research activities at the University of Western Australia, Orthopaedic Unit.
  • The main research areas include RSA evaluation of implants, cell molecular biology of musculo-skeletal tumours, autologous cartilage implantation, bone graft and bone substitutes and their use in clinical reconstruction orthopaedics. The fellow will be encouraged to undertake a research project preferably in the latter area.

Requirements

  • This fellowship is suitable for an orthopaedic surgeon towards the end of the high surgical training; previous fellows have usually finished their surgical training.

How to apply

  • Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae together with the names of three referees and this should be submitted at least 12 months before the commencement of the post. The post is often filled two to three years in advance.
