- This book focuses on the internal fixation of difficult fractures, with emphasis on maintaining the integrity of remaining soft tissue attachments.
- To accomplish this goal, preoperative planning and ‘indirect reduction’ techniques are employed. The authors’ approaches to these complex fracture problems are explained in a step-wise manner with many detailed illustrations and clinical examples.
- The reader may thus learn to use AO instruments and implants more effectively and arrive at stable internal fixation in a less invasive way.
- Chapters on reduction with plates and reduction with distractors are included. Some atypical situations are also discussed in which an implant or an external fixator may be used as a temporizing device to substitute for an absent structure normally required for a successful fixation.
- The final chapter is a potpourri of tricks which the authors often use and have found to be of value. Many of these derive from the presentations of surgeons attending the AO advanced courses.

This is one of my most favourite books, though the edition has not been updated for long. The AO principles at that point in time and now are similar in many aspects. This book written by the AO group, emphasises on Indirect reduction techniques and Ligamentotaxis. The soft tissue status in management of fractures is very critical. If you are a trauma surgeon and if you are dealing with high energy fractures, this book is an essential buy. And if you see the master’s name ie., Reinhold Ganz there are no second thoughts.
