Anatomy of anconeus muscle

Introduction-

• Small triangular muscle at the elbow area

Origin –

• Posterior aspect of the lateral epicondyle of humerus

Insertion

• Olecranon of ulna as well as proximal ulna
• Variable in distance 4 to 9 cm

Nerve supply –

• Radial nerve

 

It can be palpated in the dorsal lateral aspect of the forearm
Sometimes partially or completely blended to triceps muscle

Function –

• Extension of elbow

Anconeus is part of Arsen Pankovich Surgical Approach to the Elbow

• Approach to elbow joint and proximal part of radius and ulna –
• Incision of 4 to 9 cm
• Extensor carpi ulnaris and anconeus interval is identified an reflected
• Therefore ulna and radius can be approached this way
