Educational goals and characteristics

  • The Hand Surgery Fellowship combines private and public hospital practice, and clinical and laboratory research.
  • Approximately two days per week under supervision by Mr Anthony Berger involves private practice hand surgery, distal to the elbow, requiring new patient evaluation and work-up, conservative and surgical treatment, post-operative treatment and rehabilitation in conjunction with hand therapy.
  • Three days a week are spent at St Vincent’s Public Hospital and the Bernard O’Brien Institute of
  • Microsurgery Research under the supervision of Professor Wayne Morrison, assisting at and observing hand surgery, microsurgery and plastic surgery with Professor Morrison, and Mr Berger.
  • Active participation in weekly journal club, orthopaedic and plastic surgery conferences at St Vincent’s Public Hospital and on-call rostering for all hand surgery and microsurgery casualties is required.
  • Clinical responsibility will be assigned on experience and demonstrated skills and competence.
  • Prospective applicants should aspire to full-time or major part-time hand surgery specialist practice.
  • During the fellowship, one clinical and/or laboratory research topic should be ready for presentation or at submission status, for publication in the Journal of Hand Surgery.

Requirements

  • Applicants must hold, or be eligible to hold, a current certificate of registration to practice medicine in the State of Victoria.
  • Applicants must provide for their own medical practice indemnity insurance for work outside the public hospital system.
  • Applicants ineligible for social security benefits must provide for their own and their family’s health insurance.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed their residencies in plastic or orthopaedic surgery. Preference is given to applicants holding recognised certificates of competency in either of these specialties or applicants eligible to take examinations for them.

Applications

  • Applications including a detailed curriculum vitae with letters of recommendation from three referees with whom the applicant has worked must be received at least 12 months prior to the anticipated fellowship commencement.

    Most of these fellowships require license to practice medicine in the respective country so no point in looking for these fellowships
